About Alan J. Zell, The Ambassador Of Giftware

Alan J. Zell earned the title of "The Ambassador Of Giftware" from his 25 years working in his family's jewelry and giftware business (Zell Bros, Portland, Oregon), run by his father and uncles, all very inventive and observant men. Zell Bros' international reputation in pioneering many jewelry, watch and giftware lines was well known in their industries. Many are considered standard merchandise today. Besides starting merchandising trends, they also developed many techniques for displaying their merchandise that have withstood the test of time.

Mr. Zell was given the opportunity to develop his own style and expertise. From each member of the family he was able to learn and grow. From one he learned that the seller's function was to satisfy the customer's needs and desires. From another he was given the appreciation for the historical and technical side of the industry. From another he was given the desire to excel. He was encouraged to explore new sales techniques, presentations, displays, the result being a unique blend of business acumen and professionalism.

Mr. Zell had the good fortune of being exposed in his early career to the many fine professional "Peddlers" in the gift, accessory, tabletop and jewelry field . . . men and women who respected their competition as well as their own lines, their weak and strong points, and how their line related to other lines and other aspects of their industry.

This background has left him with few peers, for he not only understands the products he has sold and their place in the market, he understands what lies in the heart of the business: a respect for the product and the customer.

Mr. Zell has been responsible for many practical innovations in merchandising products, services, information and ideas. He has developed display and presentation techniques that "work" from the customer's point of view, hence to the advantage of the seller. He has trained many within his own and other stores and organizations. Many of his proteges are some of the most highly sought-after and respected experts in the field.

In addition to working with many retailers in the gift, accessory and tabletop field, he has shared his expertise with manufacturers and manufacturer's agents throughout the world and with craft artisans, galleries, schools and craft-fairs in all areas of the country. In this latter area, Mr. Zell is considered by many to be the ultimate "artists friend." His knowledge of materials and the methods used for making, promoting, displaying and pricing has helped many increase their sales

Consulting can be on-site or on-line. Seminars are offered as individual discussions and small and large group activities.
